Sixty or so years ago, the field of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD) was established at the intersection of the geophysical, mathematical and engineering sciences. Ever since, research in GFD has connected common problems from fields as diverse as oceanography and astrophysics, transferring knowledge, ideas and fundamental new tools between applied sciences, applied mathematics and theoretical fluid mechanics.
Now is perhaps time to take stock and gain clear perspectives and identify timely challenges in geophysical fluid dynamics. Accordingly, over the days of 6-8th July, we will hold a workshop at Ecole Normale Supérieure (Paris) and are now inviting people to consider participating. The workshop will also deliver an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of our friend and colleague, William R Young, who turns 70 this year.
During the three days, we will schedule an opening reception and scientific talks. There is no registration fee to participate in this workshop. However, nor will we be organizing accommodation, helping with travel reimbursement or covering local expenses. Instead, participants may take full advantage of what Paris has to offer.
